EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful and historic photograph captures the moment of peace and reconciliation at the conclusion of the Second Boer War in 1902. Seated at the table, Lord Kitchener (1850-1916), then Commander-in-Chief of the British forces in South Africa, negotiates the terms of the peace treaty with General Louis Botha (1862-1919), the Boer military leader who had commanded the opposition during the conflict. Botha would go on to become the first premier of the Union of South Africa in 1910. The Boer War, which lasted from 1899 to 1902, was a significant turning point in the history of South Africa and marked the end of the era of the Dutch Boer republics. The peace conference, held in Mafeking, South Africa, brought an end to the devastating conflict and paved the way for a new chapter in the country's history. Lord Kitchener's unyielding military tactics and strategic brilliance played a crucial role in the British victory, but it was ultimately the diplomatic skills of the negotiators that secured a lasting peace. This iconic image, taken in 1902, is a testament to the power of diplomacy and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
