EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite medallion print captures the enigmatic likeness of Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley (1545-1567), the second husband of Mary, Queen of Scots. Born in Scotland as the cousin of the queen, Darnley's marriage to Mary in 1565 was a politically strategic union aimed at securing Scottish and English alliances. The marriage, however, was fraught with turmoil and tragedy. Darnley is depicted here in ornate attire, wearing a lace collar and a feathered hat, symbolizing his noble status. His regal bearing is accentuated by the intricate detailing of the medallion, which highlights his striking features. The image captures Darnley at the height of his power and charisma, before the dark turn of events that would ultimately lead to his untimely death in 1567. Mary's first husband, the Dauphin of France, had died in 1560, leaving her a widow at a young age. In search of a new alliance, Mary turned to her Scottish cousin, Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley. Their marriage was celebrated with great fanfare, but it was short-lived. Darnley's involvement in the murder of Rizzio, Mary's Italian secretary, and his own subsequent death in a suspicious explosion at Kirk o' Field, cast a dark shadow over Mary's reign and left a lasting impact on Scottish and English history. This print is a testament to the complex and intriguing historical figures that populate the annals of royalty. The intricate detailing and ornate design of the medallion serve to highlight the grandeur and opulence of the era, while the haunting image of Lord Darnley serves as a reminder of the human drama that lies beneath the surface of history.
