EDITORS COMMENTS
Locomotive No. 1132 Prince of Wales, a magnificent example of the Western Region's steam engineering prowess, is depicted in this photograph. The Great Western Railway (GWR) locomotive, named after the then Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII, was built in 1922 at Swindon Works. This locomotive, a member of the famous 'Star Class' 4-6-2 Pacifics, was designed by the legendary locomotive engineer, George Churchward. The Prince of Wales locomotive showcases the intricate details and elegant lines that defined the GWR's Western design. Its large boiler, powerful cylinders, and impressive wheel arrangement enabled it to pull heavy passenger trains with ease. The locomotive's distinctive livery, featuring a rich green body and gold lining, adds to its regal appearance. In this photograph, the Prince of Wales locomotive is seen in full steam, ready to embark on its journey. The steam billows from the chimney, creating an ethereal scene against the backdrop of the railway tracks and the surrounding landscape. The locomotive's intricate details, such as the number plates, nameplates, and various fittings, are all clearly visible, making for a stunning visual display of engineering artistry. The photograph captures the essence of the golden age of rail travel, a time when steam locomotives ruled the rails and transporting passengers across long distances was an adventure in itself. The Prince of Wales locomotive, with its powerful presence and regal name, embodies the spirit of this bygone era, making it a cherished symbol of railway history.
