This image depicts the noble Roman statesman, Lucius Cornelius Lentulus (c. 85-48 BC), a pivotal figure in the tumultuous political landscape of ancient Rome during the late Republic. Lentulus, a member of the distinguished Cornelius Lentulus family, rose to prominence as a consul in 49 BC, an esteemed position in the Roman government. During his tenure as consul, Lentulus found himself at odds with the charismatic and ambitious Julius Caesar. Caesar, who had recently returned from the Gallic Wars, sought to expand his power and influence in Rome. Lentulus, along with other senators, saw Caesar's ambition as a threat to the Roman Republic and the traditional power structure. The political tension between Lentulus and Caesar came to a head in 48 BC when the latter crossed the Rubicon River with his army, marking the beginning of the civil war.
