EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) of Siam, also known as Mongkut, surrounded by eleven of his sons. Born in 1853, King Chulalongkorn is renowned for his significant role in modernizing Siam (now Thailand) during his 41-year reign. He is said to have had approximately eighty wives and over seventy children in total. The image showcases the royal family in their regal attire, with the king wearing the traditional royal hat, or "Phra Somdet Poraminthara Maha Chulalongkorn Phra Chunla Chao Yu Hua Chakri," while his sons don the "Phra Chao" hats signifying their princely status. The eldest son, Crown Prince Chowla Maha Vajiravudh, who later became King Rama VI, is seated to the king's right. The photograph offers a rare glimpse into the royal family's personal life during the late 19th century. The sons, dressed in their royal finery, display a strong resemblance to their father, reflecting the strong genetic lineage of the Chakri Dynasty. King Chulalongkorn's successful reign came to an end in 1910, and he was succeeded by his eldest son, Crown Prince Chowla Maha Vajiravudh, who ascended the throne as King Rama VI. This photograph serves as a testament to the royal lineage and the continuity of the monarchy in Thailand's rich history.
