EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures the historic moment when explorers Captain John Hanning Speke (1827-1864) and Captain James Augustus Grant (1827-1892) were warmly welcomed upon their return to the Royal Geographical Society in London in 1863. Between 1860 and 1863, Speke and Grant led a groundbreaking expedition to discover the source of the Nile River. Their journey, which proved once and for all that the Victoria Nyanza was the source of Africa's longest river, was a significant achievement in the field of geographical exploration. The two captains, both standing, are depicted in formal attire, surrounded by a crowd of eager onlookers. Speke, on the left, holds a map or chart, while Grant, on the right, gestures towards his companion. The scene exudes a sense of triumph and accomplishment, as the explorers were finally able to put an end to centuries of speculation regarding the Nile's source. Speke and Grant's expedition was particularly noteworthy because they were the first Europeans to reach the shores of Lake Victoria, which they named 'Victoria Nyanza.' Their findings were met with great skepticism at first, but their detailed reports and evidence eventually convinced the scientific community of their discovery. This engraving is an important historical document, showcasing a pivotal moment in the history of geographical exploration. It serves as a reminder of the courage and determination of these early explorers, who risked their lives to expand human knowledge and understanding of the world.
