EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the stern and resolute gaze of General John Denton French (1852-1925), Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force during World War I. The image, taken in the early 1920s, shows French in full military regalia, adorned with numerous medals and decorations, reflecting his distinguished military career. Born in India in 1852, French joined the British Army in 1871 and saw active service in various campaigns, including the Second Anglo-Afghan War and the Second Boer War. He rose through the ranks to become Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force in 1914, just in time for the outbreak of World War I. Under French's leadership, the BEF played a crucial role in the early stages of the war, holding back the German advance in the Battle of the Marne and helping to prevent the invasion of Paris. However, French's tactics were criticized for being overly defensive, and he was eventually replaced as Commander-in-Chief in December 1915. Despite his controversial tenure as Commander-in-Chief, French's legacy as a military leader remains significant. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of his important role in British military history and the sacrifices made by the British Expeditionary Force during the First World War.
