1412 1431 Burned Joan Rouen Stake
EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts the final moments of Joan of Arc, the legendary heroine and military leader of medieval France. Born in 1412 in Domrémy, Joan claimed to have received divine messages from the saints since her childhood. In 1429, at the age of 17, she led the French army to several significant victories against the English, who had occupied much of France during the Hundred Years War. However, her military successes were not enough to secure her safety. On 23 May 1431, Joan was captured by the Burgundians, who sold her to the English. On 24 May, she was put on trial in Rouen, charged with heresy and witchcraft. Despite a lack of evidence, Joan was found guilty and sentenced to be burned at the stake. The trial and execution were controversial, with many believing that Joan was a victim of political machinations and religious prejudice. This print, created in 1899, captures the dramatic scene of Joan's execution. She is shown bound and gagged, with a wooden stake behind her. A large bonfire burns in the background, and soldiers stand guard. The expression on Joan's face is one of defiance and determination, reflecting her unwavering faith and courage in the face of death. The print is a poignant reminder of the complex and tragic story of Joan of Arc, a figure who continues to inspire and intrigue people around the world. The year 1431 marked the end of Joan's life, but her legacy lived on. She was canonized as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church in 1920, and her story has been the subject of countless works of art, literature, and film. Today, Joan of Arc is remembered as a symbol of French national pride and a champion of the underdog.
