The Willows Going to the Match - Salford Rugby League

In 1900, Salford agreed a 14-year lease on 5 acres (20, 000 m2) of land belonging to the Willows Estate Company, named after the abundance of willow trees in the area. They made their debut at the Willows on 21 December 1901, beating Swinton 2–0 in front of 16, 981 fans.
In the 1960s, the terrace was flattened at the Willows Road end to make way for the Salford Football and Social Club which was officially opened on 16 June 1966.
The Willows switched on its floodlights for the first time in the match with Widnes on Friday 11 March 1966. On 26 November 1989, Salford unveiled a new £50, 000 electronic scoreboard above the Willows Variety Centre.
Salford City Reds moved to the Salford City Stadium in Barton-upon-Irwell at the start of the 2012 season. The last match at the Willows saw them lose to the Catalans Dragons 18–44 in front of 10, 146 fans, a record for a Salford City Reds home match in the Super League

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Willows Stadium, home to Salford Rugby League for over a century. The stadium's rich history is evident in every corner of this magnificent piece of art. Nestled amidst lush greenery and named after the abundance of willow trees that surrounded it, the Willows became a symbol of pride for the local community. In 1901, Salford made their debut at the Willows, triumphantly defeating Swinton in front of an awe-inspiring crowd of 16,981 passionate fans. Over time, the stadium underwent various transformations to accommodate its ever-growing fan base. In 1966, part of the terrace was flattened to make way for the Salford Football and Social Club – a testament to both sporting excellence and community spirit. The Willows truly came alive under dazzling floodlights on March 11th, 1966 during a match against Widnes. This marked a new era for Salford as they embraced modern technology with their £50,000 electronic scoreboard unveiled above the beloved Willows Variety Centre in 1989. However, all good things must come to an end. In 2012, Salford City Reds bid farewell to their historic home as they moved to Barton-upon-Irwell's state-of-the-art Salford City Stadium. The final match at The Willows saw them valiantly battle against Catalans Dragons but ultimately succumb with grace in front of a record-breaking crowd of 10,146 devoted supporters. This stunning print immortalizes not only a remarkable sports venue but also countless memories etched into its hallowed grounds by generations of loyal fans who cheered on their beloved team through thick and thin.
