Ginkgo sp. fossil leaves

Ginkgo fossil. Specimen of fossilized leaves of the Ginkgo tree (Ginkgo sp.). Ginkgos formed a significant element of Mesozoic period (around 200 million years ago) flora. Today, however, the group is represented by just one surviving species, Ginkgo biloba, the Maidenhair tree. Ginkgo biloba may have only been saved from extinction by the attentions of gardeners in the Far East - it was first seen by a European in Japan in 1690. As the sole survivor of a once great race G. biloba might well be described as a living fossil

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Ginkgo sp. fossil leaves, a testament to the ancient flora that thrived during the Mesozoic period approximately 200 million years ago. These beautifully preserved fossilized leaves belong to the Ginkgo tree, which once played a significant role in Earth's botanical landscape. Today, only one surviving species of this majestic tree remains - Ginkgo biloba, also known as the Maidenhair tree. It owes its existence to the dedicated efforts of gardeners in the Far East who safeguarded it from extinction. In fact, it wasn't until 1690 when a European first laid eyes on this living relic while exploring Japan. Ginkgo biloba can be rightfully described as a "living fossil" representing an extraordinary link between our present world and an ancient era long gone by. Its resilience and ability to adapt over millions of years make it truly awe-inspiring. As we gaze upon these delicate yet resilient ginkgo leaves frozen in time, we are reminded of nature's enduring power and evolution's intricate tapestry. This image serves as a poignant reminder of how plant life has evolved throughout history and highlights humanity's responsibility to preserve and protect our planet's precious biodiversity for future generations. Captured by Science Photo Library, this photograph invites us into a world where past meets present - where fossils whisper tales of forgotten landscapes while inspiring us with their timeless beauty.
