Jigsaw Puzzle : False-colour TEM of the Hepatitis B virus
Jigsaw Puzzles from Science Photo Library
False-colour TEM of the Hepatitis B virus
False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the Hepatitis B viruses, sometimes called serum hepatitis. Here, the large spheres (known as Dane particles) are the complete virus, with coat and core of the virus visible. Typically Hepatitis B virus occurs in clusters of 3 types of particles (seen here): the virus itself; smaller spheres and rod-shaped forms made from the protein coat of the virus. These smaller non-infectious particles are antigenically identical to the virus, and provide raw material for Hepatitis B vaccines. Hepatitis B infection, sexually transmitted, causes chronic hepatitis. Magnification: x14, 250 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the Hepatitis B virus, also known as serum hepatitis. The image reveals the intricate details of this notorious viral pathogen, with its large spheres referred to as Dane particles stealing the spotlight. These complete viruses exhibit a visible coat and core structure. Interestingly, Hepatitis B virus tends to occur in clusters consisting of three different types of particles, all captured in this remarkable image. Alongside the complete virus itself, we can observe smaller spheres and rod-shaped forms composed of the protein coat from which they are derived. Although these smaller particles are non-infectious, they possess identical antigenic properties to the virus and serve as essential raw material for developing effective Hepatitis B vaccines. Sexually transmitted, Hepatitis B infection is responsible for causing chronic hepatitis – a serious health concern worldwide. This TEM photograph offers an up-close look at the minuscule world where this infectious agent thrives. With a magnification level set at x14,250 on a 6x7cm size scale, this stunning visual representation provides invaluable insights into virology and biology research. Courtesy of Science Photo Library's extensive collection on viruses and microbiology subjects, it serves as both an educational tool and an awe-inspiring piece of scientific artistry.
