Jigsaw Puzzle : Ethanol flame
Jigsaw Puzzles From Science Photo Library
Ethanol flame
Ethanol flame. The flame is burning on a wick that is soaked in ethanol. As the ethanol on the end of the wick is burnt, more ethanol replaces it from the reservoir below (in which the other end of the wick is dipped), moving up the wick by capillary action. Ethanol (CH3.CH2.OH) is a type of chemical known as an alcohol, which is the common name for it when used in alcoholic drinks. It burns with a relatively clean (not too sooty) flame, having a relatively short chain of carbon atoms for each molecule

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of an ethanol flame. The ethereal blue and orange hues dance gracefully, illuminating the laboratory with their gentle glow. The flame is delicately burning on a wick that has been thoroughly soaked in ethanol, creating a fascinating display of combustion. As the ethanol at the end of the wick is consumed by fire, more fuel replaces it from the reservoir below. This continuous process occurs through capillary action, as the liquid effortlessly moves up the wick to sustain the flame's enchanting presence. Ethanol, also known as alcohol when used in beverages, is a type of chemical that burns with remarkable cleanliness. Its relatively short chain of carbon atoms per molecule ensures that this fiery reaction produces minimal soot. In this image captured by Science Photo Library, we witness not only a scientific phenomenon but also an artistic marvel. The single candle-like burner becomes a symbol of chemistry in action - where reactions unfold before our eyes and knowledge expands within these laboratory walls. Let this photograph ignite your curiosity about fuels, combustion processes, and chemical reactions while appreciating its sheer aesthetic appeal.
