Jigsaw Puzzles From Royal Cornwall Museum

Lis Escop, Kenwyn, Cornwall. Around 1910

Lis Escop (Cornish for Bishops Court) in winter with cattle in the foreground. Originally the Kenwyn Vicarage, in 1876 it became the residence of the Bishops of Truro. Around 1906, the Chapel and dining room, designed by E.H. Sedding and pictured in the centre of the house, were added by Bishop Stubbs. Therefore, the date of the photograph is around 1910 when these were completed. The bell turret was reportedly partially copied from the porch of St Marys in Oxford. The house was stayed in by convalescing officers and Belgian refugees during the First World War. From 1953 until 1982 it was known as Copeland Court and was used by Truro Cathedral School as classrooms and a house for the headmaster. The house was named in memory of Geoffrey Copeland of Trelissick, a former pupil whose family gifted the funds necessary to purchase the property for the school. Copeland Court became a convent for the Community of the Epiphany in 1983. Renamed Epiphany House in 2001 the house became a conference and retreat centre. Photographer: Arthur William Jordan

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enchanting Lis Escop, nestled in Kenwyn, Cornwall around 1910. Formerly known as the Kenwyn Vicarage, this picturesque residence transformed into the esteemed dwelling of the Bishops of Truro in 1876. The image showcases a winter scene with cattle gracefully grazing in the foreground. Around 1906, Bishop Stubbs enlisted E. H. Sedding to design and construct a beautiful chapel and dining room at Lis Escop, both elegantly displayed at the center of this grand house. This photograph was taken shortly after their completion, dating it to approximately 1910. The bell turret adorning Lis Escop is said to have been partially inspired by St Marys' porch in Oxford—a testament to its architectural splendor and attention to detail. During World War I, this historic abode offered solace to convalescing officers and provided refuge for Belgian refugees—an embodiment of compassion amidst tumultuous times. From 1953 until 1982, Copeland Court served as classrooms and housed Truro Cathedral School's headmaster—honoring Geoffrey Copeland's memory through his family's generous contribution that facilitated its acquisition for educational purposes. In 1983, Epiphany House became a convent for the Community of the Epiphany before undergoing another transformation in 2001 when it was renamed Epiphany House Conference and Retreat Centre—a place where individuals seek solace and enlightenment amidst serene surroundings. Photographed by Arthur William Jordan—an artist who skillfully captured moments frozen in time—this print preserves not only an exquisite architectural gem but also a rich tapestry of history within Cornwall's landscape.
