The Booklovers Britain: Yarmouth, LNER poster, 1933

Poster produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote rail travel to the Norfolk coastal resort of Yarmouth, where part of Charles Dickenss (1812-1870) novel, David Copperfield, was set. The illustration shows a scene from the book, with the young characters of David Copperfield and Little Emily seen in front of the Peggotty family home, which is formed from a disused boat. Artwork by Austin Cooper, a Canadian who studied art in Cardiff and Arbroath. He began his career as a commercial artist in Montreal, but returned to London in 1922 and designed posters for LNER, Indian State Railways and London Transport. His first show was held at the London Gallery in 1948

The Booklovers Britain - Yarmouth, LNER poster, 1933

EDITORS COMMENTS
. Step back in time and immerse yourself in the literary world of Charles Dickens with this photo print. Produced by the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote rail travel to the enchanting Norfolk coastal resort of Yarmouth, this poster transports you to a scene straight out of David Copperfield. The artwork, skillfully crafted by Austin Cooper, captures a pivotal moment from Dickens' beloved novel. In front of the Peggotty family home - ingeniously fashioned from an old boat - we find ourselves witnessing the meeting between young David Copperfield and Little Emily. The illustration beautifully brings to life their innocent friendship against a backdrop that exudes both charm and nostalgia.
