Poster produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER), promoting rail travel to the North Yorkshire resort of Whitby, the boyhood home of Captain James Cook (1728-79). The image shows Cooks ship Endeavour leaving the port in 1768, bound for the Pacific on an expedition to observe the transit of Venus, while below, a contemporary view of the same area is shown.
