EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the summer of 1932, when the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) sought to entice travelers to the charming seaside resort of Scarborough in North Yorkshire. The poster, skillfully created by Canadian artist Austin Cooper, showcases a young couple standing on a clifftop beneath the majestic castle walls. With binoculars in hand, they eagerly gaze out towards the horizon, where a pristine beach stretches into the distance. Cooper's artistic talent shines through as he captures both the beauty and allure of this coastal destination. The vibrant colors and meticulous attention to detail transport viewers straight into this idyllic scene. As we admire this artwork, we can almost feel the gentle sea breeze brushing against our skin and hear seagulls calling overhead. Born in Canada but trained in art schools across Cardiff and Arbroath, Cooper honed his skills as a commercial artist before returning to London in 1922. His exceptional talent soon caught LNER's attention along with other notable clients such as Indian State Railways and London Transport. Today, this remarkable piece stands as a testament not only to Cooper's artistic prowess but also to an era when rail travel was at its peak. It serves as a reminder that even amidst bustling city life, there are serene havens waiting for us just beyond our reach - like Scarborough - inviting us to escape from everyday worries and immerse ourselves in nature's splendor.
