The open grave of Mrs Florence Nightingales Burial at East Willow church yard
The open grave of Mrs Florence Nightingales Burial at East Willow church yard.
Florence Nightingale burial place.
Picture shows the Nightingale family burial site is at the Church of St. Margaret in East Wellow very near the family estate of Embley Park, near Romsey, Hampshire.
The church was founded in 1215, the year of the signing of the Magna Carta. It is a small building, holding around 100 people, but rich in architectural interest. Resting in one of the windows was the Scutari Cross, made of bullets from the Crimea, and beside it a framed text which was hanging in Florence Nightingales bedroom when she died. (The cross was stolen in 1991 and is replaced by a fiber glass replica.)
There is a four sided monument in the churchyard with inscriptions on each side for the four family members
Florence Nightingale (12 May 1820 - 13 August 1910) was an English social reformer and statistician, and the founder of modern nursing.
In 1854 Florence Nightingale went to the Crimea to nurse wounded British troops. She has been given legendary status subsequently because of her transformation of the way nursing was organised at the time. Later she donated her 50, 000 pounds testimonial to the creation of " The Nightingale Home for the Training of Nurses" and she received the Freedom of the City of London in 1908. She died on the 13th August, 1910.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the open grave of Mrs. Florence Nightingale's burial at East Willow churchyard, a significant historical site. Located near her family estate of Embley Park in Romsey, Hampshire, the Church of St. Margaret holds the Nightingale family burial site and dates back to 1215, coinciding with the signing of the Magna Carta. Despite its small size, accommodating only around 100 people, this architectural gem is brimming with charm. Within one of its windows rests the Scutari Cross, crafted from bullets used during the Crimean War. Adjacent to it hangs a framed text that once adorned Florence Nightingale's bedroom before her passing. Sadly, this cross was stolen in 1991 and has since been replaced by a fiberglass replica. In the churchyard stands a four-sided monument honoring each member of the Nightingale family. Notably, Florence Nightingale herself (1820-1910) was an influential English social reformer and statistician who revolutionized nursing practices through her work during the Crimean War in 1854. Her dedication led to legendary status as she transformed nursing organization at that time. Her immense impact extended beyond her lifetime when she generously donated £50,000 towards establishing "The Nightingale Home for Training Nurses". In recognition of her contributions to society and healthcare advancements, she received Freedom of the City of London in 1908. This remarkable photograph offers us a glimpse into history and pays homage to an extraordinary woman whose legacy continues to inspire generations worldwide.
