EDITORS COMMENTS
August 28, 1900: A Dark Day in Italian History - Umberto I, the Last King of Italy, Assassinated at Monza This haunting image captures the moment of tragedy and chaos that unfolded on a sunny afternoon in Monza, Italy, on August 28, 1900. The photograph depicts the aftermath of the assassination of Umberto I, the last king of Italy, by the anarchist Gaetano Bressi. Umberto I, who ruled Italy from 1878 until his untimely death, was a popular figure during his reign. However, his rule was marked by political instability, economic hardships, and social unrest. Anarchism, a radical political ideology that advocated for the abolition of all forms of government, was gaining momentum in Italy, and the country was on edge. On this fateful day, Umberto I and his wife, Queen Margherita, were on a horse-drawn carriage ride through Monza, a popular resort town, when Gaetano Bressi, a 35-year-old anarchist, approached them. Bressi, who had been planning the assassination for months, fired three shots at the king from a distance of just a few meters. Two bullets hit Umberto I in the chest, and he died shortly after being transported to the palace. The image shows the chaos that ensued after the shooting. The king's horse rears up in fear, while the queen's horse stands still. Soldiers and bystanders rush to the scene, trying to protect the queen and apprehend the assassin. The scene is one of shock and disbelief, as the reality of the king's death sinks in. Gaetano Bressi was quickly apprehended and tried for treason. He was sentenced to life in prison, but was later pardoned and released in 1911. The assassination of Umberto I marked the end of the Italian monarchy and paved the way for the rise of Fascism under Benito Mussolini. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a dark chapter in Italian history, a time of political upheaval and uncertainty.
