This evocative photograph captures the scene of Thessaloniki's Refugee District during the early 1910s, a poignant reminder of the human cost of the First World War. Thessaloniki, also known as Salonika or Salonica, was a major city in northern Greece and a significant Allied military hub during the conflict. The Refugee District was established to provide temporary accommodation for the thousands of displaced people who had fled their homes in the Balkans and the Middle East, seeking safety from the ravages of war. The image shows a bustling scene of makeshift shelters and tents, interspersed with small shops and market stalls. Men, women, and children of various ethnicities and backgrounds can be seen going about their daily lives, haggling over goods, or simply resting in the shade.
