EDITORS COMMENTS
This relief depicts a significant moment in the grand procession of Pharaoh Ramses III, the last great Pharaoh of the New Kingdom's Twentieth Dynasty, in his temple at Medinet Habu in Thebes, Egypt. Dating back to approximately 1186-1155 BC, this masterpiece of ancient Egyptian art showcases Ramses III being carried on the shoulders of his soldiers, adorned in the regal Khepresh crown, the blue crown of Upper Egypt, and the crook and flail, symbols of his divine authority as a Pharaoh. The Khepresh crown, with its distinctive blue color, is a symbol of the god Atum and represents the sky and the Nile. Ramses III's majestic appearance, with his muscular physique and serene expression, exudes the power and strength of the Pharaoh as a warrior king. The mythological significance of this scene is further emphasized by the presence of various gods and goddesses, including Amun-Ra, Mut, and Khonsu, who are depicted in the background, blessing and protecting the Pharaoh. Ramses III's reign was marked by numerous military campaigns against foreign invaders, including the Sea Peoples, and this relief may represent a victory procession or a coronation ceremony. The intricate details and vibrant colors of this relief, which have been preserved through the millennia, offer a glimpse into the rich history and mythology of ancient Egypt and its powerful rulers.
