EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, dated 3 May 1884, captures the Statue of Magog standing proudly in the Guildhall, London. Magog and his brother Gog are mythical giants deeply rooted in the history of the City of London. According to legend, these giants were the sons of King Vortigern and the enchantress Rowena. When Vortigern attempted to build a fortress, the foundations kept collapsing, and the oracle revealed that the work could only be completed when the blood of the giants was spilled. The brothers were summoned, and a battle ensued between them. Magog was slain, and his brother Gog was driven away. The victorious Britons then used Magog's bones to build the foundations of the fortress, which later became the Guildhall. The statue of Magog, as depicted in this engraving, was installed in the Guildhall in 1577. It is a reminder of the rich history and mythology that surrounds the founding of the City of London. The statue, which stands atop a pedestal, is shown with a shield in one hand and a mace in the other. The intricate details of the statue and the ornate surroundings of the Guildhall are beautifully captured in this 1884 engraving, providing a glimpse into the past and the fascinating stories that have shaped the history of London.
