The date of the event is traditionally placed around 292-305 AD, during the reign of Emperor Diocletian. St. Agnes is shown seated on a rocky outcrop, her eyes fixed heavenward in a state of rapt contemplation. She wears the typical attire of a Christian virgin, with a simple tunic and a veil draped over her head. A lamb, a symbol of her purity, lies at her feet.
