EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Parade of the Moorish Guard during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). The Moorish Guard, also known as the Regimiento de Infantería de Marina de Tetuán or Tetuan Regiment, was a unit of the Spanish Navy infantry formed in 1875, with a rich history dating back to the 18th century. The regiment was renowned for its distinctive uniforms, inspired by the Moorish traditions of Spain's Andalusian past. The image was taken during a time of great turmoil and upheaval in Spanish history. The Spanish Civil War broke out in July 1936, following a military uprising against the democratically elected government. The conflict lasted for three long years, pitting the Nationalists, led by General Francisco Franco, against the Republicans, who were supported by the Soviet Union and other leftist forces. During the war, the Moorish Guard remained loyal to the Nationalist cause. This photograph shows them proudly displaying their distinctive uniforms and weapons as they march through the streets, likely in a parade or review by their commanders. The scene is filled with a sense of tradition and loyalty, as the soldiers pay homage to Spain's rich cultural heritage. Despite the challenges and hardships of the war, the Moorish Guard continued to uphold their proud legacy. The unit was disbanded after the Nationalist victory in 1939, but its history and traditions lived on. Today, the Parade of the Moorish Guard remains an important part of Spain's military and cultural heritage, serving as a reminder of the complex and fascinating history of this beautiful and diverse country.
