EDITORS COMMENTS
Selina, Countess of Huntingdon (nee Shirley), born in 1707, was a prominent figure in the Calvinist Methodist movement during the 18th century. Daughter of a wealthy family, she married Theophilus, the seventh Earl of Huntingdon, in 1727. However, their marriage was unhappy, and Selina found solace in the teachings of the Methodist preacher, George Whitefield. In 1739, Selina left her husband and established her own religious community, known as the Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion. She provided financial support for Methodist preachers and built chapels for their use. Her influence extended beyond England, as she also supported Methodist missions in America and the West Indies. Selina's leadership was marked by her strong convictions and her ability to inspire others. She was known for her charisma and her deep spirituality, which drew many people to her cause. Her persuasive abilities were instrumental in the growth of the Calvinist Methodist sect. Despite facing criticism and opposition from some quarters, Selina remained committed to her faith and her mission. She continued to support the Methodist movement until her death in 1791, leaving behind a legacy that would shape the religious landscape of her time and beyond. This photograph print depicts Selina, Countess of Huntingdon, in her later years. Her serious expression and the somber background reflect the intensity of her spiritual convictions. The image serves as a reminder of her significant role in the history of Methodism and the influence she wielded as a religious leader.
