EDITORS COMMENTS
This beautiful photograph captures the moment when the newlywed Duke and Duchess of Albany, Prince Leopold and Princess Helena of Waldeck and Pyrmont, arrive at their new home, Claremont House, in Esher, Surrey, following their wedding on 27 April 1882 at St George's Chapel in Windsor. The couple's marriage was a joyous occasion, uniting the German princess with her British husband, who was the fourth son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Sadly, their union was cut short when the Duke, who was a carrier of the gene for haemophilia, suffered a fatal fall in March 1884, leaving his young widow to grieve the loss of her husband prematurely. The image shows the couple stepping out of a carriage, with the Duchess in an elegant gown and veil, and the Duke in military uniform, looking proudly at his bride. The grand entrance to Claremont House can be seen in the background, providing a fitting backdrop to this significant moment in British royal history. This photograph, taken in April 1882, is a poignant reminder of the short-lived marriage and the tragic circumstances that followed.
