EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative 19th century photograph captures the notorious figure of Rosolino Pilo, a Sicilian mafia bandit who terrorized the mountainous regions of Sicily during the late 1800s. The image depicts Pilo standing confidently on a rocky outcropping, his dark eyes fixed on the distant horizon, a pistol in each hand. His rugged appearance and menacing demeanor exude an aura of danger and defiance. Born in the rural village of Castelvetrano in western Sicily, Pilo's criminal career began in earnest during the 1860s, a time of social upheaval and political instability in Italy. As banditry flourished in the lawless mountains of Sicily, Pilo and his gang became notorious for their audacious raids on wealthy landowners and travelers. They would often disguise themselves as soldiers or priests to evade capture, and their crimes were fueled by a deep-seated resentment towards the ruling classes and the perceived injustices of the Italian state. Despite numerous attempts to capture him, Pilo remained elusive, and his legend grew. He was said to have a code of honor, refusing to harm women and children and only targeting those who he believed were deserving of retribution. However, his criminal activities eventually drew the attention of the Italian authorities, who launched a massive manhunt to bring him to justice. In 1873, Pilo was finally captured and brought to trial. He was sentenced to life in prison, but his legend lived on. This photograph, taken during his capture, serves as a haunting reminder of the lawless world that once existed in Sicily and the complex and often contradictory nature of the mafia and its enigmatic figures.
