EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the legendary military commander, Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts, atop his Arab charger Vonolel during the late 19th century. Roberts, born on January 30, 1832, rose to prominence in the British Army with his strategic victories in India, earning him the nickname "The Great Marquess of the Sudan." Roberts' military career began in 1853 when he joined the 24th Regiment of Foot. He quickly distinguished himself in the Crimean War, and in 1857, he was appointed as the military secretary to Lord Canning, the Governor-General of India. Roberts' greatest accomplishments came during the Mahdist War in the Sudan, where he led the British forces to a series of decisive victories, culminating in the capture of Khartoum in 1898. In this photograph, Roberts, dressed in his military uniform, sits confidently in the saddle, his gaze fixed ahead. Vonolel, an Arab charger known for its speed and endurance, appears alert and obedient, its ears pricked forward. The image captures the essence of Roberts' military prowess and his deep connection with his mount, reflecting the close bond between soldier and horse during this era. Roberts' military career spanned over five decades, and he continued to serve in various capacities until his retirement in 1911. He passed away on November 14, 1914, leaving behind a rich military legacy.
