EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic Scottish novelist, Robert Louis Stevenson, in his final days at his tropical paradise, Vailima, Samoa. Circa 1893, this image is believed to be the last photograph taken of Stevenson before his untimely death at the age of 44. Born in Scotland in 1850, Stevenson is renowned for his literary masterpieces, including "Treasure Island," "Kidnapped," and "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." Seeking respite from his debilitating health issues and the relentless pursuit of his fame, Stevenson and his family sailed to the South Pacific in 1890. They settled in Samoa, where he found solace in the warm climate and the simple pleasures of island life. Despite his frail health, Stevenson continued to write, producing some of his most beloved works, such as "The Amateur Emigrant" and "The Wrecker." In this photograph, Stevenson's weathered face and deep-set eyes reflect the wisdom and experiences of a life well-lived. The lush, tropical backdrop of Vailima serves as a poignant reminder of the exotic locale that provided him with the inspiration and tranquility he so desperately sought. Tragically, Stevenson's idyllic existence was cut short when he succumbed to a cerebral hemorrhage on December 3, 1894. This hauntingly beautiful portrait immortalizes the iconic author in his final days, leaving us with a lasting image of a brilliant mind at peace in an exotic paradise.
