EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite print captures the ethereal beauty and grace of Princess Charlotte of Wales (1796-1817), the only daughter and heir of George IV. Born on January 7, 1796, Charlotte was destined for a life of royalty from her earliest days. In 1816, she married her beloved Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, bringing great joy to her father, who had long hoped for a male heir. The union was celebrated throughout the kingdom, and the couple's union was expected to secure a peaceful succession. Tragically, Charlotte's happiness was short-lived. On November 6, 1817, she went into labor, and despite the best efforts of her doctors, she died giving birth to a stillborn son. The news of her death sent shockwaves throughout the country, and George IV was devastated by the loss of his beloved daughter. This poignant image of Princess Charlotte, taken from life, captures her youthful beauty and the sadness that came to define her final days. Her tragic death marked the end of the House of Hanover and the beginning of the House of Windsor, and her legacy continues to be felt in British royal history to this day. This print is a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of life and the enduring power of royal legacy.
