EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the spirit of adventure and discovery embodied by the legendary Spanish explorer, Juan Ponce de Leon. Born in the year 1460 in Spain, Ponce de Leon joined Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the Americas in 1493. His bravery and leadership skills were soon recognized, and he was granted the privilege to lead his own expedition in search of new lands. In 1513, Ponce de Leon set sail from Puerto Rico with a small fleet of ships, eventually landing on the shores of what is now Florida. He named the land "La Florida" in honor of the Easter season, as he had arrived during the celebrations for the Feast of the Holy Rood and the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Upon his arrival, Ponce de Leon founded the first European settlement in what is now St. Augustine, Florida, which he named "San Mateo," later to be renamed "San Agustin." The settlement marked the beginning of Spanish influence in the New World. Despite the historical significance of his discoveries, Ponce de Leon's legacy is often shrouded in myth and legend. One popular story suggests that he was in search of the Fountain of Youth, a mythical spring said to restore the youth of those who drank from it. While this tale remains unproven, there is no denying the profound impact Ponce de Leon had on the exploration and colonization of the Americas. This print, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back in time to the age of discovery and the remarkable journey of Juan Ponce de Leon.
