In what was then the largest Slate Club in England, 15, 000 in cash was distributed to the 13, 000 members of the New Tabernacle Church, Old Street, London. A Slate Club was a society whose members contributed small sums weekly or monthly to a fund held by the secretary, to be shared out at Christmas or on some other special occasion. Slate clubs derived their name from the original practice of chalking the names of the members up on a slate.
