Short SA.6 Sealand G-AIVX (msn SH.1555): A Pioneering Maritime Aviation Prototype This evocative photograph captures the Short SA.6 Sealand prototype, registration G-AIVX (msn SH.1555), in its prime during the early 1950s. Designed and manufactured by Short Brothers and Harland, this groundbreaking aircraft was a testament to the innovative spirit of aviation engineering at the time. The Short SA.6 Sealand was a flying boat designed to serve as a maritime patrol and anti-submarine aircraft. Its distinctive hull, which was partially submerged in water during takeoff and landing, allowed it to operate from the sea, making it an ideal choice for maritime surveillance and search and rescue missions. G-AIVX was retained by Short Brothers and Harland for extensive testing and evaluation, but unfortunately, its Certificate of Airworthiness (CofA) was due for renewal in 1955. With the cost of the renewal being prohibitive, the decision was made to scrap the prototype. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the past, showcasing the Short SA.6 Sealand prototype in its natural environment, demonstrating the unique capabilities of this pioneering aircraft. Despite its short life, the SA.6 Sealand paved the way for future maritime patrol and anti-submarine aircraft, making a significant contribution to the field of aviation technology.
