EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing photograph, Curtiss-Wright C-46D-15-CU Commando N95445 (msn 33477, ex 44-78081) of Phenix Airlines is showcased with an unusual decoration on its fin – a set of playing cards that match its registration number. This Curtiss C-46, delivered on March 14, 1946, had an intriguing history, particularly during the late 1950s when it was leased to Phenix Airlines, an irregular carrier that catered to the gambling scene in Phenix City, Alabama. Phenix Airlines is shrouded in mystery, as little is known about the company. However, it is believed that it served the thriving nightlife hotspot in Phenix City, which was a magnet for gamblers. The playing cards on the fin of this aircraft add to the intrigue, further emphasizing its association with the gambling industry. After being bought by Kathryn R. Martin in 1955, the C-46 was leased to Paraguayan Air Services in November 1957. It was then acquired by Marshall M. Landy in 1959. In 1960, it was sold to Taxi Aereo Panameno as HP-396, and was later reregistered as HP-334 in April 1961. In August 1961, it was leased to RIPSA of Peru as OB-Za-606, and was later re-registered as OB-R-606 in March 1964. The aircraft was eventually sold to Trans Peruana on March 12, 1965. Tragically, the C-46's journey came to an end on February 23, 1966, when it crashed into the mountains near Rioja, Peru. This photograph captures a fascinating moment in the history of this versatile aircraft, which had an unusual and intriguing connection to the world of gambling.
