The Palais-Royal, a historic royal palace and garden located in the heart of the city, had been seized by the Paris Commune, a revolutionary government established during the Franco-Prussian War. The Communards, desperate to defend their control of Paris against the approaching French Army, set fire to several buildings, including the Palais-Royal, as a last-ditch effort to slow down the advancing forces.
