EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Louis-Philippe Robert, Duc d'Orleans: Pretender to the French Throne; Scientist and Explorer in the Arctic and East Africa," is a stunning historical portrait of a man of many talents and intrigue. The image, taken in 1926, depicts Robert, Duke of Orleans, in an oval frame, with a serious and introspective expression on his face. Born in 1869, Robert was the grandson of King Louis-Philippe I of France and a claimant to the French throne. However, his life was not defined solely by his royal lineage. An avid explorer and scientist, he embarked on several significant expeditions, most notably to the Arctic and East Africa. In the Arctic, Robert led several expeditions to Greenland and Labrador, where he made important discoveries in geology and meteorology. He was also the first European to reach the summit of Mont Dagmar, the highest peak in Greenland. In East Africa, he explored the region around Lake Victoria and played a crucial role in the establishment of the Belgian Congo. Despite his scientific achievements, Robert's claim to the French throne remained a contentious issue throughout his life. He was known as the "Orleanist Pretender" and spent much of his later years in exile in England. This photograph, taken in the later years of Robert's life, captures the essence of a man who defied the expectations of his royal lineage and made significant contributions to scientific exploration. The intricate detail of his profile, the formal attire, and the historical significance of the image make this a truly captivating and valuable addition to any collection of historical photographs.
