EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases HMS Furious, a historic aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy, as she appeared in 1925. At this time, HMS Furious boasted a unique design, featuring a flush deck with no island and an unusual side funnel. The absence of an island, which is a raised superstructure that houses essential navigation and communication equipment, was an experiment aimed to increase the aircraft carrying capacity of the vessel. However, this design proved unsuitable due to excessive heating caused by the proximity of the engines to the flight deck. The aircraft carrier, commissioned in 1917, was a significant addition to the Royal Navy's fleet and played a crucial role in the development of naval aviation. HMS Furious was the first Royal Navy carrier to operate fixed-wing aircraft at sea, and it was also the first to launch aircraft from a moving ship during the First World War. In the photograph, we can see several aircraft, including biplanes and seaplanes, parked on the flight deck. The side funnel, which was an attempt to improve the ship's efficiency by drawing exhaust gases away from the engine room, is also visible on the port side. Despite its innovative design, the unconventional heating issue led to the eventual replacement of the side funnel with a more traditional island structure. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the history of aircraft carriers and the evolution of naval aviation. The Peter Butt Aviation Collection, from which this image is sourced, is a valuable resource for aviation enthusiasts and historians alike, offering a wealth of rare and captivating images from the early days of flight.
