EDITORS COMMENTS
In this delightful photograph from the 1920s, the Duchess of York, later known as Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, is seen attempting to knock down a coconut at the Fresh Air Fund annual outing in Epping Forest. Surrounded by onlookers and spectators, the Duchess, dressed in a white parasol hat and summer dress, focuses intently on the coconut shy, her underarm throw aimed at dislodging the prized fruit. The Duchess, who was the wife of the future King George VI, was known for her playful and engaging personality, and this image captures her in a moment of light-hearted fun. The Fresh Air Fund, an organization dedicated to providing free vacations for underprivileged children, held its annual outing in Epping Forest, an idyllic setting in Essex, England. The event was an opportunity for the children to enjoy a day of games, activities, and entertainment. The Duchess, who was a patron of the Fund, was a regular attendee and was always eager to participate in the various amusements, including the coconut shy. Two seconds after this photograph was taken, the Duchess reportedly knocked over a milky coconut, much to the amusement of the crowd. This image, along with another one from four years later, showing her brother-in-law, the Duke of York (later King George VI), attempting the same feat, adds to the nostalgic charm of this vintage photograph. The 1920s, with its fetes, fairs, and carefree spirit, are beautifully captured in this delightful image of the Duchess of York at the Fresh Air Fund annual outing.
