EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the essence of cricket legend, W. Hedley (1865-1937), during his illustrious career with Somerset County Cricket Club. Hedley, a true cricket pioneer, graces the image in classic cricket attire, donning a crisp white shirt, striped blazer, and the distinctive cap adorned with the Somerset badge. The background, filled with lush greenery and the vibrant colors of the pavilion, adds to the serene ambiance of the scene. Born on February 12, 1865, in Taunton, Somerset, Hedley made his first-class debut for Somerset in 1886, at the tender age of 21. Known for his exceptional batting skills, Hedley scored a total of 12,522 runs in his first-class career, with a highest score of 201 not out against Yorkshire in 1898. He led Somerset as captain from 1894 to 1903, guiding them to numerous victories and instilling a strong cricket culture in the county. Hedley's contributions to cricket extended beyond his home county, as he represented England in 13 Test matches between 1896 and 1902. His impressive performances on the international stage further solidified his status as one of the greatest cricketers of his time. Retiring from cricket in 1903, Hedley remained an integral figure in the sport, serving as a selector for Somerset and later becoming a member of the Marylebone Cricket Club. His passion for cricket continued until his passing on October 2, 1937. This photograph is a testament to the rich history of cricket and the enduring legacy of W. Hedley, a true cricketing icon from Somerset.
