EDITORS COMMENTS
Amid the chaos and turmoil of World War II, in the heart of Rome, Italy, the NaFI Alexander Club stood as a beacon of tranquility and respite for Allied soldiers. Commandeered from a department store approximately the size of London's Selfridges, the club was named after the Allied commander, Harold Alexander, 1st Earl Alexander of Tunis. The Alexander Club was a sprawling complex with numerous floors, but the true gem was the Writing Rooms. Circa 1944, this photograph captures the essence of the Writing Rooms, a serene haven nestled within the bustling club. The internal, roofed, open space on the floor below showcases a striking contrast to the war-torn city outside. The focal point of the room is a beautiful pool filled with golden koi carp, their vibrant scales shimmering in the soft light. A tranquil fountain adds to the peaceful ambiance, creating an idyllic setting for soldiers to unwind and escape the harsh realities of the battlefield. The NaFI Alexander Club in Rome offered various facilities to cater to the needs of the soldiers, including a library, barber shop, cinema, and canteen. However, the Writing Rooms stood out as a unique space where soldiers could express their thoughts, write letters to their loved ones, and reconnect with their humanity amidst the chaos of war. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience and determination of the soldiers during World War II and the importance of finding moments of peace and solace in even the most challenging of circumstances.
