EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the corner view of the historic Duchess of Devonshire pub, located in the heart of Battersea, London. Established in the late 19th century, the pub was once a beloved local watering hole and gathering place for the community. The building, adorned with ornate architectural details and the distinctive Hoare & Company Limited sign, exudes a sense of history and tradition. The Duchess of Devonshire, which opened its doors in approximately 1895, was named after the Duchess of Devonshire, who was a prominent figure in London society at the time. The pub was owned and operated by Hoare & Company Limited, a well-known name in the British brewing industry. The pub was a popular destination for locals and visitors alike, offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere, excellent beer, and a place to socialize and connect with friends and neighbors. Over the years, the Duchess of Devonshire became a cherished part of Battersea's rich cultural heritage. Unfortunately, as of July 2018, the pub has been demolished, marking the end of an era for the local community. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the history and character that once defined this beloved Battersea institution. The back of the print includes the address of the pub, SW11 2UG, for those who may still long for a taste of its unique charm.
