At this time, Simpson was the husband of the enigmatic Wallis Warfield Spencer, who would later become better known as the Duchess of Windsor following the abdication of King Edward VIII. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor's relationship was the subject of much controversy during this period, as Edward's decision to abdicate the throne in order to marry Wallis, who was divorced, caused a constitutional crisis. Simpson, who was previously married but divorced, was also divorced, making their union unacceptable to the Church of England and the British public.
