EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from the First World War era, Jessica Borthwick, a brave and determined woman, stands confidently on the deck of her Red Cross schooner, the Grace Darling. The year is 1914, and the vessel, named after the famous lighthouse keeper who saved the lives of shipwrecked sailors, is moored at the pier in Ostend, Belgium. The tranquil scene belies the turmoil of the war that rages around them. Jessica Borthwick, the owner of the Grace Darling, had bravely volunteered to transport supplies and aid to the war-torn areas of Europe. The schooner, which was manned by an all-female crew, had become a vital lifeline for those in need. But the danger was ever present, as evidenced by the bullet holes visible on the pier behind her. Despite the threat of enemy fire, Jessica remains undeterred. She is dressed in a heavy coat and hat, her arms folded protectively across her chest, her gaze fixed on the horizon. A young boy and a group of children, who have gathered on the pier to witness the arrival of the Grace Darling, watch her with a mixture of awe and admiration. The wheel of the schooner is turned by another crew member, her focus entirely on the task at hand. The sails are set, the ropes are coiled, and the engine hums softly in the background. The sea stretches out before them, a vast expanse of water that holds both the promise of safety and the threat of danger. This photograph captures a moment in time, a snapshot of the resilience and courage of one woman and her crew, who risked their lives to bring hope and aid to those affected by the devastating conflict of the First World War.
