EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking 17th century copperplate engraving, we find a regal and imposing portrait of Holy Roman Emperor Charles III, also known as Charles the Fat or Carolus III, depicted in the grandeur of his imperial robes. Born in 839, Charles III was the eldest son of Emperor Louis the German and Richenza of Saxony. He ruled as King of East Francia from 876 until his death in 888, and was later elected Holy Roman Emperor in 881. Charles III is shown here with a serious expression, his piercing gaze fixed on the viewer. He wears the imperial crown adorned with precious stones and the insignia of the imperial scepter and orb. The background is filled with classical motifs, including columns, laurel wreaths, and the symbols of the Caesars and the Kaisers, emphasizing the continuity of the Roman imperial tradition. The emperor's extensive territories are reflected in the inscription at the bottom of the print, which lists his various titles: "Carolus III. Imperator Romanorum, Rex Francorum et Italicorum, Marchio Austrie, Bavarie, Carinthie, et Croatiae, Dux Suabie, Saxonie, et Lotharingie." This translates to "Charles III, Emperor of the Romans, King of the Franks and Italians, Margrave of Austria, Bavaria, Carinthia, and Croatia, Duke of Swabia, Saxony, and Lotharingia." This engraving is taken from "De Roomsche Monarchy," a work by Francois Salma published in Utrecht in 1697. The work was illustrated with a series of copperplate engravings by the renowned engraver Abraham Bogaert, who expertly captured the grandeur and majesty of the imperial portraits. This print offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history of the Holy Roman Empire and the powerful figures who ruled over it.
