EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the Hartweg's Penstemon, Penstemon hartwegii, a beautiful and rare flowering plant native to the Rocky Mountains in North America. The engraving, created by G. Barclay after a drawing by Miss Sarah Drake, was published in John Lindley and Robert Sweet's Ornamental Flower Garden and Shrubbery in 1854. The Hartweg's Penstemon, also known as Beardtongue, is a perennial herb that grows up to 30 cm tall. It is characterized by its distinctive bell-shaped flowers, which come in shades of pink, purple, and white. The plant's tubular flowers are two-lipped, with the upper lip forming a hood that hides the nectar from all but the longest-tongued pollinators, such as hummingbirds. The intricate details of the Hartweg's Penstemon in this engraving are truly captivating. The delicate veining on the leaves, the delicate petals of the flower, and the fine hairs covering the plant are all expertly rendered in this beautiful illustration. The use of hand-coloring adds an additional layer of depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a true work of art. The Hartweg's Penstemon was named in honor of the German botanist and explorer, Dr. Heinrich Hartweg, who first collected specimens of the plant in the Rocky Mountains in 1848. This engraving not only serves as a beautiful representation of the plant, but also as a testament to the important role that exploration and botanical illustration played in the scientific discovery of new species during the 19th century.
