EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Fish Leeches and Freshwater Leeches," is an exquisite illustration from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," or "Dictionary of Natural Science," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was produced under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century. The engraving showcases a diverse array of leeches, both fish-dwelling and freshwater species. The fish leeches depicted include the Longtail Croaker Leeches (Branchiobdellida 1), Pontobdella spinosa, Whitmania laevis, Hirudo vittata, Piscicola geometra, Ichthyobdella geometra, and Geobdella trochetii. These leeches are typically found attached to the gills or bodies of various fish species, such as the longtail croaker (Lonchurus lanceolatus), meagre (Argyrosomus regius), and stone bass (Dianema labrax). The freshwater leeches in this illustration are less commonly associated with fish but are essential components of their respective ecosystems. These include the Lonchuro leech (Lonchiuro sciena), Corvo leech (Corvus di Mare), and Ombrina leech (Ombrina ombrina). The intricate details of these leeches are beautifully rendered in this hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, which was drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and engraved by Carini. This illustration is a testament to the exquisite artistry and scientific accuracy of the time, providing a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of the early 19th century.
