Ann Rutherford in a Dolly Tree formal gown
Ann Rutherford in a Dolly Tree formal gown from The Ghost Comes Home (1940). Season in and season out white was always seen as the perfect colour for formal finery. This white silk chiffon gown was slightly stiffened. Cut on simple lines, with a full skirt and a moderately fitted bodice, it was piped in scarlet. Around the fairly low neckline were red blossoms and a red bow was in her hair. Another novel touch was her evening bag with a double heart shape regarded as one of fashion?s highlights. The flowers and piping on the dress could be changed to a different colour or the dress could also be worn plain with costume jewellery. To complete the ensemble there was a three-quarter length evening wrap in scarlet velvet and silver wedge-soled sandals. The wrap was lined in silver lam and was reversible. If the dress was worn without its red accents the silver side of the wrap could be used. Date: 1940

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Ann Rutherford gracefully dons a stunning white formal gown from the 1940 MGM film "The Ghost Comes Home." The elegant attire, designed by Dolly Tree, was a timeless piece that embodied the sophistication and glamour of Hollywood's golden age. White was the epitome of formal finery during this era, and this silk chiffon gown, with its simple lines and full skirt, was no exception. The bodice was moderately fitted and subtly stiffened, adding structure to the dress. The gown's most notable features were the scarlet piping and red blossoms that adorned the fairly low neckline and the red bow in Ann's hair. The novelty of this ensemble did not end there. Ann's evening bag, shaped like a double heart, was a fashionable highlight of the time. The flowers and piping on the dress could be changed to different colors, or the gown could be worn plain with costume jewelry. To complete the look, Ann wore a three-quarter length scarlet velvet and silver wedge-soled sandals evening wrap. The reversible wrap, lined in silver lamé, was a practical and stylish addition to the outfit. If the dress was worn without its red accents, the silver side of the wrap could be used instead. This photograph, taken in 1940, captures the essence of jazz age Hollywood glamour and the timeless allure of MGM studios. Ann Rutherford's elegant attire, designed by Dolly Tree, remains a testament to the fashionable and captivating era of the 1940s.
