EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Nakajima Ki-34 AT-2 Thora, an agile and versatile aircraft initially designed and flown as a light transport plane for the Japanese military. The Ki-34, also known as the Thora, made its first flight in 1935 and was originally intended for use as a civilian airliner. However, the outbreak of war in the Pacific saw both the Japanese Army and Navy adopt the type for their respective aviation branches. The Ki-34 was a sleek and streamlined monoplane with a metal fuselage and fabric-covered wings. Powered by a pair of Ha.11a liquid-cooled engines, it boasted a top speed of 230 miles per hour and a range of over 1,000 miles. Its versatility was demonstrated by its ability to serve in various roles, including troop transport, cargo transport, and even reconnaissance. Despite its impressive capabilities, the Ki-34 was eventually replaced by more advanced aircraft in the post-war period. However, its legacy lives on as an important chapter in the history of Japanese aviation. This photograph captures the Ki-34 in its military configuration, with the distinctive camouflage paint scheme and military markings that became synonymous with Japanese aircraft during World War II. The image offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the beauty and power of this remarkable aircraft.
