EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the final moments before the fateful day that would change American history forever. Taken on September 6, 1901, the image shows President William McKinley leaving the Temple of Music during the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. The President, dressed in a dark suit and bowler hat, is surrounded by a throng of well-wishers, who reach out to touch him or shake his hand. McKinley, a veteran of the Spanish-American War and the 25th President of the United States, appears in good spirits as he waves and smiles at the crowd. Little did anyone know that this would be one of the last photographs taken of McKinley before he was assassinated later that day. Leon Czolgosz, a Polish-American anarchist, approached the President as he was greeting the public and shot him twice at close range. McKinley was rushed to the hospital, but succumbed to his injuries eight days later. The Temple of Music, a grand pavilion built for the exposition, served as the site for many cultural and political events during the six-month-long fair. The day of McKinley's shooting was a particularly busy one, with a military parade and a reception for the press scheduled. The President's visit to the Temple of Music was a popular event, and the photograph captures the excitement and energy of the crowd. Today, this photograph stands as a poignant reminder of a tragic moment in American history. It offers a glimpse into the past, a moment frozen in time before the unthinkable happened. The image also underscores the importance of preserving historical records, as it serves as an invaluable source of information and insight into the events of the past.
