The date may be confusing as the Western calendar was still using the Julian calendar at the time, while the Soviets had already adopted the Gregorian calendar, resulting in the anomalous date. Regardless, this day marked a pivotal moment in Russian history. The demonstrators, a sea of working-class men and women, are seen marching through the streets of Petrograd, holding banners and flags, their faces expressing a mix of determination, hope, and defiance. The May Day celebrations, traditionally a day for the labor movement, had taken on a new significance in the context of the ongoing Russian Revolution. The Provisional Government, which had come to power following the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II, had promised to grant workers' demands for shorter working hours and higher wages. However, these promises had not been kept, and the people were growing restless.
