EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Major General George Meade, a pivotal figure in the American Civil War, during his tenure as Commander of the Federal Army of the Potomac. Meade, born in Cadiz, Spain in 1815, was a career military man who rose through the ranks to lead the Union forces during one of the most significant battles in American history - the Battle of Gettysburg. Meade is depicted here in his full military uniform, complete with the distinctive gold braiding and sash of his rank. His stern expression and piercing gaze convey a sense of determination and focus, reflecting the immense responsibility he bore as the commander of the Union forces during the three-day battle in July 1863. The Battle of Gettysburg is considered a turning point in the Civil War, as it marked the last major Confederate offensive and ultimately led to their eventual defeat. This photograph, taken by renowned American photographer Alexander Gardner, is a testament to the historical significance of Meade's leadership during this critical moment in American history. The image has been preserved through the collections of the Greensmith Collection at Mary Evans Picture Library, providing a valuable window into the past and a reminder of the sacrifices made during the Civil War.
